| Welcome to the English Department |
|
| Meet the Staff |
There are 4 teachers of English
and English Literature at The Mount School:
Mrs Christine Hughes (Head of Department)
Mr Rhodri Davies (Head of Sixth Form)
Mrs Helen Warnock
Mr Tim Messom
The Department values contact with parents about
any issue which has a bearing on their daughters
progress.
Contact us via the main school number (020 8959
3403 Ext 219) which will go to voicemail if we are
unavailable to take the call. We will then return
your call as soon as our teaching schedule permits. |
| Our Ethos |
The English department supports
pupils in their progress towards competence, creativity,
confidence and self-reliance.
We work to enable students to realise their potential
as individuals and to be positive contributors to
society, fully equipped with the skills to express
themselves and interpret information.
An awareness and appreciation of diversity is fostered
through |

the choice
of texts, regularly reviewed |

and group work |

talks from
those outside the school community |
|
Whilst encouraging independence of mind, pupils
should develop sensitivity to the views of others,
and to the possibility of diverse viewpoints.
English shares cross-curricular links with history,
drama, religious studies, geography, science, ICT,
DT and music.
Through reading, writing, speaking and listening
the Department aims to make pupils aware of the
power, complexity, versatility and sensitivity of
the language as well as its potential for change
over time.
Students are exposed to a range of literature from
different cultures and periods of history.
Written tasks offer the opportunity to develop a
range of skills from the functional to the creative.
An awareness of essay skills (and how they should
be tailored for subjects other than English) is
of a particular relevance. |
| 2007/08 Events |
Follow-up to last terms Peter
Pan event in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.
You may remember, we were aiming to help break the
record for the greatest number of individuals simultaneously
to read a named extract from Geraldine McCaughreans
Peter Pan in Scarlet. It was a well-orchestrated
event with our community police officer, Diane Trinder,
on hand to verify the numbers and ensure we adhered
to the rules.
We received news in August that the attempt had
been unsuccessful with 66,988 participants falling
short of the 223,000 needed to break the record.
However, the charity valued our contribution and
in return for our efforts have sent us pin badges
which will be distributed to all who took part.
Well done to everyone involved.
Watch this space for more English-related charity
events and competitions. |
| Direct Marketing Awards 2008 |
We had another successful year in
what is a national competition and still more trophies
and certificates have made their way to the foyer
area of school.
You were probably following the fortunes of the
three teams who were short-listed to attend the
final presentation awards at the Magic Circle Headquarters.
They were Peaches and Cream and Popeye.
The whole of last years Year 10 produced entries
which were imaginative in their fulfilment of the
charity brief. They will also have practised many
of the skills they will need for their GCSE Media
paper. |
