| Welcome to the History Department |
|
| In the History Department we aim
to encourage and further pupils' fascination with
the past. We use a variety of resources and activities
to explore the broad areas of the curriculum, including:
school trips, drama activities, source analysis
and other creative tasks. |
Curriculum
All classes are mixed
ability classes, there is no setting. |
Years 7 - 8
The history department broadly follows
the National Curriculum. We start by looking at
Medieval England from 1066 and cover the major social,
political and religious developments of the next
six centuries. Among the topics covered are the
Norman Conquest, the Black Death, the Civil War
and a study of Tudor religion. |
Year 9
In Year 9 we look at the major developments
in British history between 1750-1900 before examining
the First and Second World Wars. There is also a
special series of lessons on the Holocaust. |
GCSE
The focus in Years 10 and 11 is
on twentieth century world history. In Year 10,
we look at international relations between the wars,
including the Versailles Treaty, The League of Nations,
appeasement and Nazi Germany and special modules
on the Cold War. There are also two depth studies:
one on Nazi Germany and the other on Britain 1906
- 1918. A further coursework option on interwar
American society is covered in Year 11. |

AS/A2
Three modules are covered in both
years 12 & 13, one of which is a coursework
option. In Year 12, we study World War I, Nazi politics
and society and British foreign policy 1939 - 1964.
In Year 13, the focus is again on modern history
as we study Chamberlain and the Policy of appeasement
and Civil Rights in the USA 1863-1980. |
The Mount School Join Community in Remembering the Holocaust |
On 28th January 2009, year 9 and the students
studying History in for GCSE in year 10 went to the Finchley
Reform Synagogue in remembrance for the Holocaust. As
we arrived at the synagogue, we were greeted by the friendly
staff who showed us to our seats.
A lady practising to be a Rabbi told us
about what was in store for us that day, and started with
showing us a very cleverly made video of this years theme
Stand Up To Hatred. The video showed us real
life stories of people who had been a target of hatred.
Next was a very special guest Eva Oppenheimer,
who was a survivor of the Holocaust. She spoke about her
life from when she was born right up to when the war was
over and she was living peacefully. This talk was very
interesting and enlightened us all on the suffering that
just one Jewish person went through; let alone 6 million
others too.
Our last activity of the day was to create
someone who would have died in the Holocaust. We chose
every detail; name, family etc, and kept these details
in a jam jar for us to keep.
Overall the trip was
a great privilege and a once in a lifetime experience that Im
sure none of us will forget.
