Aims and Objectives
Mathematics is an important part of everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop an enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.
Aims
To develop positive attitudes towards mathematics and to give pupils a sense of achievement
To raise confidence in order to enable pupils to overcome difficulties
To develop an ability to apply mathematics to other areas of the curriculum
To stimulate natural curiosity to ask questions, explore patterns and explain reasoning
To ensure that pupils know number facts by heart
Use the facts they know to deduce other facts
Use and feel comfortable with a variety of calculation strategies
Recognise when to use appropriate operations and methods
Judge whether answers are reasonable and have strategies for checking them
Calculate accurately and efficiently, both mentally and using pen and paper
Make sense of number problems

English
Aims and Objectives
We aim to develop a love for the English language in its written and spoken forms. We encourage pupils to develop skills to communicate effectively in speech and writing and to listen with understanding, to be responsive, enthusiastic and knowledgeable readers. We aim to provide an environment for language development, which is stimulating and is characterised by high expectations of success so that the fullest potential of each individual may be realised.
Aims of English (by Year 6)
Read with confidence, fluency, enjoyment and understanding
Use a range of independent strategies to self-monitor, correct, retrieve information and evaluate what has been read
Write with confidence, imagination and enthusiasm with an awareness of purpose and audience
Use grammar and punctuation correctly
Write to a high standard in a range of genres
Understanding the sound and spelling system and use this to read and spell accurately
Communicate effectively, speak with confidence, and structure their talk in ways which are coherent and understandable
Listen carefully with concentration so they are able to respond thoughtfully and appropriately
Ask and answer questions to demonstrate and clarify their understanding
Write with fluent, legible joined handwriting and take pride in the presentation of their work
