The Mathematics Department aims to
enable each student to develop her mathematical ability
to the full. For this purpose, students are taught in
mixed ability groups in Years 7 and 8 and then set in
Year 9 in preparation for Key Stage 4.
Mathematics is key for all pupils to develop as it equips
them with a powerful set of tools to understand and change
the world. These tools include: logical reasoning; problem
solving skills; the ability to think in abstract ways
and creativity.
We encourage pupils' pleasure with the subject, particularly
when they solve problems or suddenly find a hidden connection
between quantities or topics. This enables pupils to enjoy
Mathematics as they progress with the subject, which can
be useful to them in later life.
Mathematics promotes the key skills of Communication,
Application of Number and Information Communication Technology.
The pupils are given coursework, investigations and projects,
where they are expected to explain their work carefully,
methodically and systematically. Through regular exercise
of mental arithmetic and by using and applying their knowledge
and understanding of Mathematics, pupils develop their
application of number.
Pupils can improve their own learning and performance
through topic tests. This can lead to an improved power
of concentration and logical thinking and also review
their approach to problem solving.
Mathematics also promotes other skills such as thinking,
financial capability and work related learning. This is
developed by applying Mathematics to daily life problems
and other subject areas.
Throughout the pupils' mathematical education, we encourage
pupils to use Mathematics in relation to the wider world
and on a personal level. This ensures that we show the
importance of Mathematics to their spiritual, moral and
social development. Their spiritual development is supported
by learning about the mathematical principles behind some
of the natural forms and patterns in the world around
us. Their moral development is supported by helping pupils
to use logical reasoning and recognise consequences of
their particular decisions and choices in Mathematics.
Different cultures have contributed to the development
of Mathematics and its importance is universally recognised.
The Mount School is a multi-cultural school with international
pupils and pupils from many cultures. Both these facts
help support their social and cultural development. We
encourage pupils to work in groups to develop co-operation
and support between them, also to promote discussion of
ideas. |
