Welcome to the Psychology Department
Mr. Klidzia teaches both AS and A2 Psychology. The examining board is AQA, specification A. Both courses are demanding at an intellectual and an emotional level. They provide a framework for personal development of the students who take the course, as well as significantly contributing to the career prospects of students. Psychology has an increasingly important and extensive place in the work place. Employers seek the kinds of skills that the course promotes including effective group work skills, presentation skills, lateral thinking, and writing coherently about complex issues. These skills are also an essential part of most undergraduate degree courses.
The AS Course
Psychology students will find that they are challenged by the exciting array of topics in this stimulating course. They learn about how psychologists suggest people can deal with stress in their personal and working lives. They learn about the nature of relationships and gain an understanding of the diversity of human experience. They study cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, physiological psychology, individual differences and social psychology.

The students are often familiar with Sigmund Freud and keen to learn more about his contribution to Psychology. During this course, as they explore the psychodynamic approach, they will have an opportunity to discuss Freud’s ideas.

They must learn too about the way that research is carried out and there is no better way to do this than to design their own experiments and conduct research themselves.

Textbooks are a vital tool for students at A’level in all subjects. In Psychology students must also relate the work they are doing to media stories, and use the internet to find out more.
The A2 Course
During this course students consolidate their learning from the AS course but also look in closer depth at different approaches to Psychology. Students will continue to develop an understanding of ethical, cultural, social and contemporary issues. They study psychopathology, focussing on the causes of Depression, Schizophrenia and Anxiety Disorders.

This department emphasises active exploration of ideas. For this reason, whilst studying the work of Piaget, students will have the opportunity to observe primary school children and explore the way younger children think and also the way they learn. Discussion is a key element of the course as students explore theories and concepts which are often complex and intellectually demanding.

The Coursework component of this course is aimed at further development of knowledge of research methods, including statistical analysis.
