AS/A2 Drama and Theatre Studies
Key features of the specification:
Edexcel’s Drama and Theatre Studies is designed to provide a balance across a range of learning activities. This specification combines the activities of exploring plays, creating theatre, the performing of plays, the analysis of theatre and critical evaluation of all these elements. Students completing the course successfully will have a thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others.

Aims of Theatre Studies course:
Develop their interest and enjoyment in drama and theatre both as participants and as informed members of an audience, fostering an enthusiasm for and critical appreciation of the subject
Develop understanding and appreciation of the significance of the social, cultural and historical influences on the development of drama and theatre
Experience a range of opportunities to develop a variety of dramatic and theatrical skills, enabling them to grow creatively and imaginatively in both devised and scripted work
Integrate theory and practice through their understanding of critical concepts and the discriminating use of specialist technology

Theatre Visits:
Students follow the Edexcel Specification, completing four units of work, two in each of the two years.

Unit 1: 'Exploration of drama and theatre' is an internally assessed coursework option, studying two contrasting play texts. Students complete practical assessments in class workshops and submit a supporting portfolio of 'Exploration Notes' which may include drawings, diagrams and conclusions drawn from practical and discussion work. Students are also required to experience

Unit 2: 'Theatre text in performance' students undertake a role in the production of a play. Additionally, students must offer either a monologue or duologue from a different play. They are assessed by a visiting examiner on the night of the performance. Work in preparation for Unit 2 informs their response.

Unit 3: 'Exploration of dramatic performance' is where Students work on the process of devising an original piece of drama for presentation to an audience during Unit 3, 'Devising', which is internally assessed.

Unit 4:'Theatre text in context' a written, externally assessed examination of their study of one set play text and another prescribed play written and performed between 1575 and 1720.

Is this the right subject for me?
You need to be curious about issues and ideas and have a creative instinct for communicating your views through drama. You may be keen on acting, writing or on the visual and technical side of theatre and wish to develop your skills in some or all of these areas. Equally you will be interested in going to the theatre to see plays performed by different theatre companies.

What will I learn?
The course demands practical, creative and communication skills in almost equal measure. You will extend your ability to create drama and theatre, either in a performing or production role. You will also be required to write about drama and to develop your powers of analysis to become an informed critic. The course will involve taking part in drama productions, as well as studying plays and playwrights.
