| Welcome to the English Department |
|
| Meet the Staff |
There are 4 teachers of English
and English Literature at The Mount School:
Mrs Christine Hughes (Head of Department)
Mr Rhodri Davies
Mrs Helen Warnock
The Department values contact with parents about
any issue which has a bearing on their daughters
progress.
Contact us via the main school number (020 8959
3403 Ext 219) which will go to voicemail if we are
unavailable to take the call. We will then return
your call as soon as our teaching schedule permits. |
| Our Ethos |
The English department supports
pupils in their progress towards competence, creativity,
confidence and self-reliance.
We work to enable students to realise their potential
as individuals and to be positive contributors to
society, fully equipped with the skills to express
themselves and interpret information.
An awareness and appreciation of diversity is fostered
through |
| |
the choice
of texts, regularly reviewed |
| |
discussion
and group work |
| |
theatre
visits |
| |
talks from
those outside the school community |
|
Whilst encouraging independence of mind, pupils
should develop sensitivity to the views of others,
and to the possibility of diverse viewpoints.
English shares cross-curricular links with history,
drama, religious studies, geography, science, ICT,
DT and music.
Through reading, writing, speaking and listening
the Department aims to make pupils aware of the
power, complexity, versatility and sensitivity of
the language as well as its potential for change
over time.
Students are exposed to a range of literature from
different cultures and periods of history.
Written tasks offer the opportunity to develop a
range of skills from the functional to the creative.
An awareness of essay skills (and how they should
be tailored for subjects other than English) is
of a particular relevance. |
