Welcome to the Geography Department
Introduction

The department philosophy is to enable students to enjoy and participate in the lessons, allowing them to appreciate the link between class work and the wider world.

The Aims of the Geography Department
To ensure students have an appreciation of the landscape and their environment
To instil enjoyment and respect for the subject that extends beyond the classroom
To ensure students are proficient in their factual knowledge of the world
To enable students to use a range of geographical skills that foster enquiry

The students should be aware that the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired in Geography can be used in other subject areas, and vice versa and that Geography is not limited to the classroom, but that it is all around them.

Skills:
To allow the student to develop a wide range of geographical skills, which will allow them to understand and take an interest in the subject, whilst at school and after they have left.
Knowledge:

Students should gain a broad knowledge of the subject in accordance with the National Curriculum at KS3 and KS4.

At GCSE this knowledge will become more detailed and specialised. Throughout their study of Geography the different topics will not be seen in isolation but linked.

Understanding:
Complete understanding of concepts will occur at different times for individuals. Concepts are introduced at and appropriate stage and then returned to on a number of occasions to be re-introduced, consolidated or extended.
Evaluation:

In order to improve their skills, knowledge and understanding the students are encouraged to evaluate their work and performance.
Through understanding their marks, listening and contributing to discussions, preparing displays and completing self-assessment sheets, the students will learn to judge and review their work in an informed manner.

Throughout Key Stage 3 and 4, we use videos and DVDs, internet research, encourage discussion, debates and role-plays, use competitions and quizzes, and there is a ‘Geography Now’ board showing the relevance of Geography to our everyday lives, as well as a constantly changing display of students work and trips. We also have an Interactive Whiteboard in the department!
