Welcome to the History Department

In the History Department we aim to encourage and further pupils' fascination with the past. We use a variety of resources and activities to explore the broad areas of the curriculum, including: school trips, drama activities, source analysis and other creative tasks.
Curriculum
Note: All classes are mixed ability with no setting.
Year 7
The history department broadly follows the National Curriculum. We start by looking at Medieval England from 1066 and cover the major social, political and religious developments of the next six centuries. Among the topics covered are the Norman Conquest, the Black Death, the Crusades, the peasants’ revolt and the Princes in the Tower. The girls produce a project on castles during their first year.
Year 8
The girls now study the Tudors and Stuarts in depth, focusing on the social and religious changes that swept across Britain from 1500 to 1650. The topics studied include the Reformation, the reigns of Edward VI and Mary, an extensive study of the Elizabethan era and the Civil War.
Year 9
In Year 9 we look at the major developments in British history between 1750-1900, including studies of the industrial revolution, the Chartists and the suffragettes.
Years 10 -11 (GCSE)
The focus in Years 10 and 11 is on twentieth century world history. In Year 10, we look at international relations between the wars, including the Versailles Treaty, The League of Nations, appeasement and the origins of the Second World War. There are also two depth studies: one on Nazi Germany and the other on Britain 1890-1918. A further coursework option on the Russian Revolution is covered in Year 11.
