Welcome to the Science Department
Aim:

Science is playing an increasingly important part in our society.  An understanding of Science and an ability to analyse scientific arguments is, accordingly indispensable.

At the Mount we hope not only to provide girls with that understanding, but also to train them in skills which they can use elsewhere in the curriculum and throughout their lives.  All students take science to year 11.

Key Stage 3
In Years 7- 8, students are taught General Science where they are exposed to the three main disciplines Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as Geology and Astronomy.  Student learning is fostered through practical investigations teacher led discussions, co-operative learning activities and field trips to the zoo and the natural history museum.

An extension group competes in the Salter’s Festival of Chemistry in year 8.
In year 9 students are taught by a subject specialist and start their IGCSE courses.
Key Stage 4
In years 10 - 11 students can either undertake the Edexcel IGCSE Separate Sciences or IGCSE Double Science.  These are taught by subject specialists where practical work is an important and integral part of the learning process.   IGCSE provides a strong scientific platform to enable students to make a smooth transition to A Level Sciences.  Classes are supported by surgeries and extension groups.
